- Sorry – I couldn’t think of anything funny to say about the helmet

It would totally suck if you survived the Zombie Apocalypse then tripped and cracked your head open wiles scavenging. Soldiers, construction workers and extreme sports guys wear a helmet for a reason – so they don’t split their noggin.
You don’t have to get a Kevlar army helmet (but if you can great), a skateboarding helmet is fine and by far the best – the construction style helmet is not what you are looking for – you need a helmet with a chin strap.
Don’t be that guy who just survived a horde of 50 Zombies – then ran around the corner and hit his head and knocked himself out cold on an air conditioner sticking out of a window just to wake up to 50 zombies eating your guts.

Just as an FYI – not strictly for zombie or SHTF situations – but you can find all manner of seriously good, sound military helmets complete with liners and sometimes with covers, for cheap cheap on the internet or in mil-surplus catalogues.
No, not Kevlar or any new sophisticated stuff ( which would usually run you into the 200 plus price range)_ – but simple steel pots which did a pretty damn good job during WWII, Korea and to some degree, Nam. Remember, they ain’t made to stop a Barret 50 ( and even if they could, the impact would rip your freakin’ head off your shoulders anyway) but to protect your CPU from debris, shrapnel, ricochet stuff, and of course, rotting teeth and bloody claws.
I’ve seen, and tried, German, Polish and Czech helmets and certainly the good old USA steel pots. Sportsman’s and Cheaper Than, both offer the good ones for 15 to 25 bucks complete. Good insurance.

Besides – think of your buds…. nothing demoralizes a guy like having his mate’s brains splatter in his face ( I know this for a fact) so if you bite the big one, wearing a helmet will keep your grey matter neatly contained and not ruin your buddies’ BDUs.

also… this way the zombies can’t eat your brains. there’s some extra protection there..
